Workers from South Dublin County Councils parks unit held an unofficial protest at the council’s headquarters on December 12th last. Council managwment was in dispute with the worker’s supervisors regarding hours worked off of time sheets. Management’s tactics in this was to deny payment to the workers for extra hours worked thus using the workers as a stick with which to beat the supervisors, deep thinking here.
By the time the money owed had reached two days pay the workers had enough. They chose December 12th to mount the protest as councillors were holding their monthly meeting on that day to discuss the 2014 budget.
Having assembled outside the headquarters, they moved indoors to occupy the public office blowing whistles, and generally causing mayhem. Meanwhile the presence of their colleagues outside on the roadway was causing traffic disruption.
In the public office the workers were addressed by their shop stewards. Members of People Before Profit were there lending support including Councillor Gino Kenny, candidates Ruth Nolan and Nicky Coules.
The following day the workers were informed that management had caved in and payment would be made before Christmas. It doesn’t do to be quiet.
